Which Provinces Need to Take the National Professional Practice Examination (NPPE)?

If you want to be an engineer in Canada you may have to write the National Professional Practice Examination (NPPE). The exam tests your ethics, professional responsibility and Canadian law, which are the three main fields a professional engineer must be familiar with before entering professional practice.


Provinces and Territories That Demand the NPPE

The NPPE is required for registration in almost all provinces and territories in Canada. The following are provincial regulating bodies that have adopted this examination to be written by their candidates for registration:

●     Alberta, APEGGA, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta)

●     British Columbia, Engineers and Geoscientists BC

●     Saskatchewan, APEGS(Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan)

●     Manitoba, Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba

●     Northwest Territories and Nunavut, NAPEG (Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists)

●     Yukon, Engineers Yukon

●     Prince Edward Island, Engineers PEI

●     New Brunswick, APEGNB (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick)

●     Nova Scotia, Engineers Nova Scotia

These provinces and territories accept the National Professional Practice Exam as the official evaluation for the professional knowledge of law, ethics, and engineering practice.

Provinces That Use a Different Exam

Some provinces decide to hold the professional practice examinations for their provinces independently, instead of the NPPE.

Ontario The PPE (Professional Practice Exam,) which is under Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), is the one that is used by Ontario.

Quebec The licensing process is completely different and is run by Ordre des ingnieurs du Québec (OIQ).

However, the main goal of any exam is to ensure that the engineer will be aware of the professional responsibilities and legal frameworks and that he or she will abide by them.
