Is Your Experience Enough for an RPEng Competency Report?


The Australian engineering industry has strict guidelines for registered professional engineer (RPEng) to maintain their registration. One of these requirements is to submit a Competency Report to Engineers Australia (EA), the governing body for RPEngs in Australia. This report shows the engineer's experience, knowledge and skills in their field. But is experience alone enough to pass the competency report?

What are the RPEng Competency Report Requirements?

RPEng must show a high level of experience, skills and knowledge in their chosen field. To successful competency report writing. The report should cover the engineer's work history, education and training as well as their involvement in industry activities and professional development.

EA requires RPEngs to provide evidence of their experience in at least three of the 15 competencies outlined in the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard for Engineering.

Experience is Not Enough

While experience is a crucial component of an RPeng Australia competency report. This is not enough to pass the competency report. Engineers Australia requires RPEngs to show a deep understanding of the competencies and how they have applied them in their work.

This requires more than just listing work experience. It needs a full explanation of how the engineer's background fits the needed skills.

Key Factors to Consider

When writing a Competency Report, RPEng should consider the following key factors:

Education and Training: Then list your qualifications including degrees, diplomas and certifications. And explain how your education or training has helped you develop the competencies required by EA.

Industry Activities: You need to explain your involvement in industry such as professional events and workshops. Explain how these activities helped you improve the skills needed for engineering practice.

Professional Development: Outline your plan for up-to-date professional development which includes training, education and mentoring. Explain how this will help you maintain and improve your competencies.

Evidence: Provide evidence to support your claims such as certificates, awards and references.

While experience is an important part of a Competency Report.  It is not enough on its own to pass the RPENG Australia competency report.

​RPEng must show a deep understanding of the competencies and how they have applied them in their work.

By considering the key factors mentioned above, RPEngs can ensure their report meets the requirements and they maintain their registration.
